Foreigners who move to Malta love to complain about the fruit and vegetables.
They’ll tell you it’s not as fresh as back home.
Not as flavourful.
Not good enough.
They’re not wrong…
But here’s what they don’t get.
Malta is small.
We don’t have much land.
And the land we did have? We built apartments on it…
To house the very same people now complaining.
You moved here. And in the process, we lost the fields, the soil, and the space to grow produce.
So now we import low-grade produce from wherever.
Because there’s simply not enough land to feed everyone.
And it’s not because we don’t know how to grow good food.
Malta offers some of the finest fruits and vegetables in the world.
But because there’s no room left to grow it…
And the cherry on top?
Me, a Malteser, born and raised in Malta, have to eat bland tomatoes and watery strawberries while listening to you complain about our fruit and vegetables.
You moved here. Now we both eat imported plastic.
Thanks.
